JUSTICE MUST FREE ITSELF FROM THE SHACKLES OF POLITICS

- THE ATTACK ON BROZI IS AN ATTACK ON THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM - Today, the President of the Court of Cassation, Mr. Zef Brozi, declared to the press that, by order of the police, he has been placed in isolation, under the pretext of protecting his life. Mr. Brozi's statement says that he is not sure whether this police action was taken to protect him or to prevent him from carrying out his duties, from communicating freely with the media, and from exercising his functions as President of the Court of Cassation. In his statement he also denounces that political pressure is being exerted on him following the court's recent decisions. He considers the executive's interference in the independence of the judiciary unacceptable and calls for the competent authorities to clarify this situation immediately. Further on, the statement says that such a situation seriously undermines the rule of law and creates a dangerous precedent for Albanian democracy. According to him, any security measure must be taken only with the knowledge and consent of the protected person and not be used as a tool of pressure or political isolation. Various political reactions are expected regarding this development, while the issue has turned into an important test of the relations between the branches of power in the country.

- PD seems less interested in democracy and more in power - In an interview with the press, Mr. Nano says that the political attacks against the opposition and especially against its leaders are taking on worrying proportions. According to him, unfounded accusations and public pressure exerted by figures from the majority do not help resolve the political crisis, but rather deepen it. He stresses that the opposition has the right to exercise its constitutional role and that attacks on its leader constitute a provocative act that endangers institutional normality. Mr. Nano accuses the Democratic Party of being less interested in consolidating democracy and more interested in preserving its political power. According to him, the country needs political dialogue, respect for institutions, and guarantees for free elections in order to avoid an escalation of the political conflict.
